families. In 2005, we enhanced our suite of consumer products
to help those pursuing higher education. Among our offerings:
■Federally guaranteed loans for students and parents.
■Federal consolidation loans.
■Private education loans to supplement borrowing under
the federal programs.
■Private education loans available directly to consumers
for those who choose not to use the traditional financial
aid process.
■Private education loans for students studying abroad.
■Private consolidation loans for debt-management
assistance.
Effective debt counseling is critical to the success of
our customers, as well as the student loan industry and the
American public who supports it. Today, federal student loan
default rates are at historic low levels. Sallie Mae devotes sig-
nificant resources to educate students on financial aid options
and to counsel student loan customers on their rights and
responsibilities so that they can successfully manage their
student loan repayment and find payment relief if they need it.
