TELUS 2011 ANNUAL REPORT . 17
From caring to giving
TELUS remains an Imagine Caring Company, donating more than
one per cent of pre-tax profits to charitable organizations each
year. In 2011, TELUS, our team members and retirees donated
more than $46 million to charitable and not-for-profit organizations.
Through the Team TELUS Charitable Giving program, team
members, retirees, board members and retail dealers support
causes they care about and TELUS matches their donations.
In 2011, TELUS, our team members and retirees donated
$7.1 million through this program to more than 2,900 charities.
Also, with Dollars for Doers, when team members and retirees
volunteer more than 50 hours in a year, TELUS contributes $200
to a charity of their choice. Further, when a retiree volunteers
more than 200 hours, TELUS donates $500. In 2011, TELUS
donated $786,000 to Canadian charities with this program, and
our team members and retirees volunteered 555,800 hours.
The 2011 TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes was held in over
70 communities across Canada. More than 4,000 TELUS team
mem bers, retirees, family and friends participated and, including
donations from TELUS and our customers, raised $500,000.
Overall, 48,000 Canadians joined the TELUS Walk and raised
$7.5 million for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Offering humanitarian relief
When disasters strike, TELUS is committed to helping out. After
forest fires raged through Slave Lake, Alberta last May, team
members worked to maintain service and ensure emergency
responders had essential telecommunications services. We also
provided free mobile calling, mobile phones and comfort kits
to displaced residents. After the earthquakes and tsunami in
Japan last March, we provided free long distance calling and
access to TV Japan to help our customers stay connected
with family and friends in the region.
In response to these disasters, TELUS also enabled customers
to make text donations to relief agencies and provided cash
donations from the Company and its team members.
Enabling customers to help us give
At TELUS, we believe that to do well in business, we must
do good in the community. That is why we make business
decisions that benefit the environment, enhance our
communities and support youth, while sustaining our own
business success.
In 2011, we continued to empower socially conscious
consumers to make purchasing decisions that directly benefit
charities they care about. With our Go Pink campaign, TELUS
donated $25 for every pink BlackBerry sold across Canada to
support breast cancer technology in regional hospitals. With
our TV for Good and Phones for Good campaigns, we donated
$100 to local charities for every new TELUS TV service (Optik
or Satellite) and smartphone activation in select markets in B.C.,
Alberta and Eastern Quebec. Combined, the three campaigns
resulted in donations of $4.3 million in 2011.
We give where we live
TELUS has a history of giving where we live. Since 2000,
TELUS, our Community Boards, team members and retirees
have contributed more than $260 million to charitable and
not-for-profit organizations and volunteered 4.2 million hours
of service to local communities.
