16 . TELUS 2011 ANNUAL REPORT
At TELUS, we give where we live. Through the innovative use of technology, our efforts focus on arts and
culture, education and sport, and health and well-being in the environment, in ways that help educate
and empower youth to reach their full potential, while making a difference in our communities.
COMMUNITY INVESTMENT
growinggiving
in 34 regions across Canada and participated in more than
300 activities. These included assembling school supply kits
for students in inner city schools, serving meals to those
less fortunate and planting trees in local parks. Since 2006,
more than 52,000 volunteers have participated in 1,250
TELUS-organized activities to help make a positive difference
in their communities.
Internationally, the TELUS Day of Giving also took place
in the Philippines, El Salvador, Guatemala, the United States
and the United Kingdom. More than 5,000 team members
participated in 14 events, most of which were devoted to building
or improving homes and schools in impoverished areas.
Throughout the year, 2,500 TELUS Community Ambassadors
volunteered their time and provided support to those in need.
The Ambassadors, who include TELUS retirees and team
members at 20 clubs across Canada, contributed 63,500
care items to those in need in 2011, including school bags
for kids and comfort kits with personal hygiene items for
the homeless.
Growing our reach locally
TELUS Community Boards’ innovative approach puts philanthropic
decision-making in the hands of local leaders who know their
communities best and can determine how to make the greatest
difference. The focus of these boards is to provide local grants
to grassroots charities that support local youth. With the launch
of two new boards in 2011 – Quebec City and Thompson
Okanagan, British Columbia – we now have 11 boards across
Canada that, last year alone, contributed $5 million to local
charities and supported 418 charitable organizations. Late in
2011, TELUS International launched three Community Boards
in locations where we own and operate contact centres –
the
Philippines,
El Salvador and Guatemala.
We also have eight TELUS Community Action Teams in
B.C., Alberta and Ontario, which in 2011 donated $230,000 to
90 grassroots projects outside of major centres.
