34. Principal subsidiary undertakings, associated undertakings and investments
Principal subsidiary undertakings
At 31 March 2004, the Company had the following subsidiary undertakings carrying on businesses which principally affect the profits and assets of the Group.
They all have the same year end date as the Company, unless otherwise stated, and have been included in the Group consolidation.
Unless otherwise stated the Companys principal subsidiary undertakings all have share capital consisting solely of ordinary shares and are indirectly held. The
country of incorporation or registration of all subsidiary undertakings is also their principal place of operation.

Japan Telecom Co.,Ltd, the fixed line operator in Japan, was sold during the year. The results of this business were included in the Group results up to 30 September 2003.

(2) Share capital consists of 597,379,729 ordinary shares and 1.65 million class D and E redeemable preference shares of which 100% of the ordinary shares are held by the Group.
(3) Vodafone Holding GmbH has a 31 December year end. Accounts are drawn up to 31 March 2004 for consolidation into the Group’s financial statements.
(4) There is also one preference share in issue, but it is not held by the Group.
(5) The principal place of operation of Vodafone Omnitel N.V. is Italy.
