emergency response and public
officials as well as elementary
school teachers and students.
Employee safety is just as important,
and we delivered our best employee
safety performance ever in 2012,
achieving a 12.5 percent improvement
over 2011 and almost 40 percent over
the past five years. We’ve initiated a
number of safety efforts with the goal
of no injuries or incidents that we call
our Journey to Zero. While the effort
is successful, we’ve learned that
safety is indeed a “journey” that takes
constant vigilance. It’s a challenge
but for the sake of our employees and
their families, Xcel Energy will remain
on that journey.
KEEPING
CUSTOMERS
SATISFIED
We are equally focused on customers,
who not only expect safe, reliable
energy but also help in controlling their
energy costs. As an industry leader in
energy management and efficiency,
we offer a wide variety of programs
for business and residential customers
and work with them one on one in
many cases to achieve those savings.
In 2012, Xcel Energy customers set a
new record for energy conservation
for the third year in a row.
That commitment was recognized
in 2012 when we received the
prestigious ENERGY STAR® Award
for Sustained Excellence from the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
and U.S. Department of Energy.
The agencies cited our continued
leadership in delivering energy
efficiency to customers, a cause
we’ve championed for more than
two decades.
Customers awarded us with high
satisfaction results, which were
at a record 95 percent positive.
Of course, our focus on energy
efficiency benefits you as well. Over
the past two decades, we estimate
that we’ve avoided the need to build
at least 14 medium-sized power
plants. We also are able to earn
an incentive on our effort, which
increases its business value.
SUSTAINING
ENVIRONMENTAL
LEADERSHIP
Similar to the proactive approach
we take in strengthening utility
infrastructure, Xcel Energy is an
environmental leader, and we aim
to stay that way.
Our leadership strategy is built
on three components:
•฀We pursue emission-reduction
initiatives that address
environmental risk efciently, while
creating value for shareholders.
We work with our customers to
save energy and avoid emissions.
We have the nation’s largest
portfolio of renewable energy.
Today, Xcel Energy is the
No. 1 provider of wind energy
in the nation, according to the
American Wind Energy Association.
We’ve held that spot for eight
consecutive years.
