130millionbarrelsintheUnitedStatesand33millionbarrels
inthe“Other”internationalregion.Salesinthe“Other”region
ofthe
UnitedStatestotaled103million
barrels,withtwofields
accountingforapproximatelyone-halfofthevolume.The27
millionbarrelssoldintheGulfofMexicoreflectthesaleofa
numberofShelfproperties.The“Other”internationalsales
includethedisposalofwesternCanadapropertiesandseveral
fieldsintheUnitedKingdom.Allthesaleswereassociatedwith
thecompany’sprogramtodisposeofassetsdeemednonstrategic
totheportfolioofproducingproperties.
Noteworthyamountsinthecategoriesofproved-reserve
changesfor2002through2004inthetableonpage89aredis-
cussedbelow:
Revisions In2002,reserveswererevisedupwardbyanet161
billioncubicfeet(BCF)forconsolidatedcompanies,asincreases
of759BCFinternationallywerepartiallyoffsetbynetdownward
revisionsof598BCFintheUnitedStates.Internationally,the
majorityofthe277BCFnetupwardrevisioninAfricawasassoci-
atedprimarilywithaperformanceassessmentofseveralfieldsand
amultifieldgasdevelopmentproject.Anincreaseof375BCFin
theAsia-Pacificregionincludedtheeffectofsecuringacontract
tosupplyLNGtoChinamarketsfromcompanyproducingopera-
tionsinAustralia.IntheUnitedStates,aboutone-fourthofthe
598BCFnetdownwardrevisionwasassociatedwithtwofields
inthemidcontinentregionbasedonanupdatedassessmentof
productionperformanceandchangestooperatingconditionsof
thewells.Mostoftheremainingnegativerevisionwasassociated
withreviewsofperformanceinmanyfields.FortheTCOaffili-
ateinKazakhstan,the293BCFincreaserelatedmainlytoproject
approvaltoexpandgasprocessingfacilities.
In2003,revisionsaccountedforanetincreaseof1,627BCF
forconsolidatedcompanies,asnetincreasesof2,233BCF
internationallywerepartiallyoffsetbynetdownwardrevi-
sionsof606BCFintheUnitedStates.Internationally,thenet
879BCFincreaseintheAsia-Pacificregionrelatedprimarily
toAustraliaandKazakhstan.InAustralia,theincreasewas
associatedmainlywithachangetotheprobabilisticmethodof
aggregatingthereservesformultiplefieldsproducedthrough
commonoffshoreinfrastructureintoasingleLNGplant.The
increaseinKazakhstanrelatedtoanupdatedgeologicmodelfor
onefieldandhighergassalestoathird-partyprocessingplant.
Thenet976BCFincreaseinthe“Other”internationalareawas
mainlytheresultofoperatingcontractextensionsfortwofields
inSouthAmerica.IntheUnitedStates,aboutone-thirdofthe
net606BCFnegativerevisionrelatedtotwocoalbedmethane
fieldsinthemidcontinentregion,basedonperformancedata
forproducingwells.Downwardrevisionsforthebalanceofthe
write-downwereassociatedwithseveralfields,basedonassess-
mentsofwellperformanceandotherdata.
In2004,revisionsincreasedreservesforconsolidated
companiesbyanet248BCF,composedofincreasesof928BCF
internationallyanddecreasesof680BCFintheUnitedStates.
Internationally,abouthalfofthe346BCFincreaseinAfrica
relatedtopropertiesinNigeria,forwhichchangeswereassoci-
atedwithwellperformancereviews,developmentdrillingand
leasefuelcalculations.The236BCFadditionintheAsia-Pacific
regionwasrelatedprimarilytoreservoiranalysisforasingle
field.Mostofthe325BCFinthe“Other”internationalareais
relatedtoanewgassalescontractinTrinidadandTobago.Inthe
UnitedStates,thenet391BCFdownwardrevisionintheGulfof
Mexicowasrelatedtowell-performancereviewsandtechnical
analysesinseveralfields.Mostofthenet316BCFnegativerevision
inthe“Other”U.S.arearelatedtotwocoalbedmethanefieldsin
themidcontinentregionandtheirassociatedwells’performance.
The963BCFincreaseforTCOwasconnectedwithupdatedanaly-
sesofreservoirperformanceandprocessingplantyields.
ExtensionsandDiscoveries In2002,consolidatedcompanies
increasedreservesby892BCF,including395BCFintheUnited
Statesand227BCFintheAsia-Pacificregion.IntheUnited
States,229BCFwasaddedintheGulfofMexicoand161BCF
inthe“Other”region,primarilyduetodrillingactivities.The
additioninAsia-Pacificresultedfromagassupplycontractin
Australiathatenabledbookingofapreviousdiscovery.
In2003,extensionsanddiscoveriesaccountedforan
increaseof526BCFforconsolidatedcompanies,reflectinga
388BCFincreaseintheUnitedStates,with270BCFaddedin
theGulfofMexicoand118BCFinthe“Other”region.The
GulfofMexicoincreaseincludeddiscoveriesinseveraloffshore
Louisianafields,withalargenumberoffieldsinTexas,Louisiana
andotherstatesaccountingfortheincreasein“Other.”
In2004,extensionsanddiscoveriesaccountedforan
increaseof214BCF,reflectinganincreaseintheUnitedStates
of144BCF,with89BCFaddedinthe“Other”regionand54BCF
addedintheGulfofMexicothroughdrillingactivitiesinalarge
numberoffields.
Sales In2004,salesforconsolidatedcompaniestotaled547
BCF.Ofthistotal,436BCFwasintheUnitedStatesand111BCF
inthe“Other”internationalregion.IntheUnitedStates,“Other”
regionsalesaccountedfor289BCF,reflectingthedisposalofa
largenumberofsmallerproperties,includingacoalbedmethane
field.GulfofMexicosalesof147BCFreflectedthesaleofShelf
properties,withfourfieldsaccountingformorethanone-thirdof
thetotalsales.Salesinthe“Other”internationalregionreflected
thedispositionofthepropertiesinwesternCanadaandthe
UnitedKingdom.
