When a disaster such as a hurricane or ood hits, Target
PROACTIVELY PARTNERS with the American Red Cross
and The Salvation Army to send hygiene and non-perishable
food kits to community shelters and evacuation areas.
We design our stores to have a
LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT.
For example, we use energy-
efcient LED lights, build with
locally manufactured and recycled
materials when possible and, in
the case of four stores in Chicago,
incorporate green roofs.
Since 1946, we have given 5 percent of our income to our communities.
Today, that equals more than $3 million a week in support of the arts,
education, social services and volunteerism. In 2009, our giving totaled
more than $133 million in cash, $53 million in in-kind donations, and
450,000 volunteer hours. In addition to our ongoing community giving,
we also support emergency-management organizations like the
American Red Cross by providing funding, resources such as relief
kits, and expertise to help prepare for and respond to disasters.
In the civic arena, we engage in legislative activities that add value
to our business, team and communities. For example, we work to
develop state and federal legislation to combat organized retail crime
since this activity harms business, consumers and our communities.
And as a steward of the environment, Target is actively working to
reduce waste, minimize our carbon footprint
and manage our water
consumption. In 2009, we helped our guests
celebrate Earth Month
by giving away one million reusable bags and increasing awareness of
our eco-friendly assortments.
Whether we are funding school library
makeovers or helping our guests
make environmentally friendly choices,
Target is committed to improving the
communities where we operate.
