Focusing on Sustainable
Business Practices
We strive to make a measurable difference in the four fundamental areas
of people, products, community and planet. Our ongoing efforts to
encourage our employees to adopt healthy lifestyles took shape in many
forms in 2010, including successful team-based weight loss programs. We
also enhanced our Healthy Measures wellness program, which offers
employees insurance premium discounts for meeting health-related criteria.
Safeway recognizes that every year consumers become more sensitive to
the nutritional value of what they consume and what products they use in
their homes. Several of our private label brands address those needs, as we
have provided shoppers with access to more healthy, affordable products.
Fundamental to Safeway is an ongoing effort to give back to our
communities. We believe we can make the greatest impact when we get
behind the causes our customers and employees support. In 2010, Safeway
raised or donated over $200 million for a wide range of causes, including
cancer research, education, hunger relief, assistance for those with special
needs and disaster relief.
Finally, Safeway remains committed to being an industry leader in
protecting the planet, and we have a number of programs and initiatives
in place for evaluating and improving our environmental footprint. In
2010, Safeway became the first U.S.-based retail grocery chain and
manufacturer of private label merchandise to join The Sustain ability
Consortium in support of the organization’s science-based work toward a
more sustainable global supply chain. We also were named to the Dow
Jones Sustainability Index North America for the second year in a row.
