Express Scripts 2009 Annual Report
3
Proponent of a new
alignment for member,
plan sponsor and PBM
In 1986, Express Scripts recognized that the
PBM landscape was understudied, with members
underserved. Plan sponsors held valuable but
unmined member data that contained information
on utilization, adherence, delivery channel and waste.
This realization was the impetus for our comprehensive
examination of the potential buried in the data. The
result was a laser-like focus on evidence-based clinical
programs and advocacy for the needs of members.
Driven by our independent research department —
an industry fi rst — we produced another industry fi rst:
the inaugural Drug Trend Report. In the ensuing years,
we have consistently advocated doing whats right for
plan sponsors and members based on the evidence
and sound clinical judgment. We’ve executed on other
nationally recognized “fi rsts” (Step Therapy, our annual
Outcomes Conference
and client collaborative
planning sessions) that
have enabled members and
plan sponsors to realize
the most reward from the
pharmacy benefi t.
Our Focus Is on People
Our clinical leadership has continued to evolve with
Clinical 360SM, a complete suite of programs offering
a holistic approach to member health through care
coordination, data integration and innovative programs
to improve therapy adherence. Our clinically pure
approach to a clinically sound formulary champions
the appropriate promotion of generic drugs. It’s in our
culture. Our legacy of independence from the infl uence
of retail pharmacies or pharmaceutical manufacturers
fully aligns our interests with those of our clients and
members, giving us the freedom to emphasize generics
and preferred brands.
Record Generic Fill Rate
Express Scripts posted a record average generic fi ll
rate of 69.1% in the fourth quarter of 2009.
We continue to focus on delivering superior clinical
programs to members while driving out waste in
the pharmacy benefi t.
