CARMAX CARES
Supporting the communities where CarMax associ-
ates live and work is a basic element of our culture.
Since its establishment in 2003, THE CARMAX
FOUNDATION has granted more than $9.1 million to
non-profi t organizations, including grants of $1.4 mil-
lion in fi scal 2011. The Foundation’s mission is to uti-
lize a portion of CarMax pre-tax profi ts each year to
support non-profi t organizations that promote youth
leadership, children and family education, and other
organizations that are important to our associates.
The Foundation’s REGIONAL GIVING PROGRAM allows
associates in each of our eight regions and at CarMax
Auto Finance to allocate funds to their local commu-
nities. “CarMax and The Foundation care about the
associates and what they care about in their com-
munities,” said one CarMax associate. In addition,
associates are encouraged to volunteer in their com-
munities as part of departmental “TEAM-BUILDERS”
where they can join their colleagues in supporting
local charities. Another CarMax associate remarked,
“The Foundation has been very supportive in helping
us plan and organize volunteer team-building events at
the store.” Fiscal 2011 was a record year for volunteer
team-builders for CarMax, supporting more than 230
causes, including participation in a variety of chari-
table walks, and working at children’s hospitals, Boys
& Girls Clubs and animal shelters.
The Foundation also supports associates in their indi-
vidual giving—either in cash or volunteer hours—by
offering a MATCHING GIFTS PROGRAM for contributions
made to qualifying charitable organizations. Company-
wide, CarMax matched nearly $231,000 in associate
gifts during fi scal 2011. Our new “Easy Gift” program
allows associates to make contributions to the charity
of their choice through automatic payroll deductions.
One CarMax associate said, “It’s wonderful to see the
extent to which The CarMax Foundation goes to posi-
tively impact the community and support organizations
that provide opportunities to the less fortunate.”
Also new for The CarMax Foundation in fi scal 2011
was the CARMAX CARES COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD.
This important initiative recognizes CarMax associates
across the country for their volunteer efforts and other
community support. Winners of the award were honored
at company events, and each had the opportunity to
select a non-profi t organization that received a $5,000
grant on their behalf from The CarMax Foundation.
One winner commented, “The CarMax Cares award is
my highest achievement thus far. I am honored to have
been chosen by CarMax and my peers…I look forward
to doing more to build and support my community
through The CarMax Foundation. It is truly an awe-
some program that gives back so much.”
