Volvo construction equipment is
used in a number of industries in
society, including recycling, extraction
and civil engineering, as well as in mining
and forestry. Customers range from large
contracting and leasing companies and
authorities to small family-owned
companies. Common to all of these
customers is their focus on good total
economy and high productivity resulting
from reliability and a good work environ-
ment, as well as a stable market for
second-hand equipment.
The product line consists of articulated
haulers that are used to transport large
volumes of material in difficult terrain
in connection with excavations and in
quarries and mines. Volvo wheel-loaders
are used in industrial operations to load
and unload gravel, salt, wood chips and
other bulk items, among many other
operations. Because it has a flexible tool
holder, the same machine can also be used
to handle pallets, to move heavy loads,
and in connection with the handling of
timber. Volvo excavators are used in the
construction industry, in connection with
such large projects as airports, and also
in the mining and forest-products
industries. Volvo also manufactures motor
graders that are used in large civil engi-
neering projects, as well as by public
authorities, to build and maintain roads
and remove snow.
Volvos product range within compact
machines includes small excavators and
wheel loaders, which are, for example,
sold to leasing companies that, in turn,
rent the machines to companies, public
authorities and private individuals. The
machines are used, for example, in small
construction projects and load-handling,
sometime as alternative to manual
labor. In 1999 new products were intro-
duced in the fields of compact excavators,
motor graders and wheel-loaders, as well
as a new series of Volvo excavators that
are produced in the plant in South Korea.
Financing and service agreements are
increasing in importance in the soft
product segment. In the service sector,
because it is difficult to transport its
equipment over long distances, Volvo CE
has developed an organization for so-
called on-the-spot service. In addition to
qualified service, rapid and reliable access
to spare parts is a critical factor in deter-
mining the operating time of a machine;
accordingly, Volvos spare parts ware-
houses throughout the world have high
ambitions when it comes to maintaining
short delivery times.
Volvo CE, with production facilities on
four continents, is one of the world’s
leading manufacturers of construction
equipment. Its products are marketed in
more than 100 countries, mainly via
private, independent dealers. North
America and Western Europe are the
most important markets.
