As at 31 March 2002, there are lease obligations amounting to $359.4 million (2001: $1,040.0 million) which are covered by funds
amounting to $360.7 million (2001: $1,042.3 million) placed with financial institutions under defeasance and other arrangements which
have not been included in these financial statements.
The Company continues to remain the primary obligor under the lease agreements and as such, there are contingent liabilities
(secured) of $359.4 million (2001: $1,040.0 million) in respect of unpaid lease commitments.
Operating leases
The Company has 15 B747-400s, 1 B777-200 and 6 CFM-56 engines under operating leases with fixed rental rates. The lease terms
range from 4 to 10 years for the B747-400 and B777-200 aircraft, and 2 to 3.5 years for the CFM-56 engines. In 10 of the B747-400
lease agreements, the Company holds options to extend the leases for a further maximum period of 2 years. None of the operating
agreements confer on the Company an option to purchase the related aircraft or engines. Sub-leasing is allowed under all the lease
arrangements.
