8 Supporting Communities Near and Far
SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES NEAR AND FAR
CIGNA has a responsibility
to help improve health.
We understand that health means diff erent things
to people all over the world… from feeling well to
overcoming physical, emotional and fi nancial hardships
to having the basic necessities of nutritious food, clean
water and safe shelter. We off er help to individuals and
communities in need through our employee volunteers,
charitable giving and programs that raise awareness
about the many facets of health.
CIGNA International offi ces in Asia-Pacifi c and Europe
embarked on a corporate social responsibility
program called “BE the Diff erence,” an initiative
designed to provide the “Basic Essentials” of life
and health. Employees in 13 countries have been
supporting clean water and safe shelter projects to
help build sustainable communities around the world.
Through fundraising and volunteer activities,
employees helped Water For People®, a U.S.-based
organization that provides clean water and sanitation
to developing countries; and Habitat for Humanity®, which
builds and renovates aff ordable homes around the world.
Home construction took place in Thailand in early 2010,
with future building projects planned in other countries.
Additionally, all eight of CIGNA’s branch offi ces in China
held simultaneous 10K walkathons to raise money to build
a school that will benefi t the victims of the devastating
2008 earthquake in the Sichuan Province. Close to 2,000
employees of CIGNA and CMC (CIGNA’s joint venture
company with China Merchant’s Group in China) took part.
