Due to the worldwide economic crisis in the last half of 2008, Hertz experienced the most
difficult operating conditions in its 90 year history, with significantly deteriorating demand,
pricing and residual sales in all of its businesses precipitating revenue and profit contrac-
tion. Nevertheless, the Company achieved overall profitability for the full year, generated
strong fourth quarter cash flow and maintained solid liquidity. The introduction of
cost-saving and service-enhancing innovations, combined with a comprehensive, global
efficiency focus since 2007, enabled Hertz to outperform the competition and set the stage
for accelerated, profitable growth when economic conditions improve.
