Mild hybrid concepts serve as the basis.
These recover substantial amounts of
energy during deceleration and thus
help to save fuel. To achieve this, Audi
has developed a new partial electrical
system running at volts. Since it pro-
vides substantially more power than
the current -volt system, it unlocks
potential for new technologies such
as the electrically driven compressor.
This small electric motor, which can ac-
celerate to high speeds within hundredths
of a second, compensates for the slight
delay in response that is intrinsic to
exhaust-driven turbochargers in the TDI
engine. The Audi RS TDI concept tech-
nology demonstrator, which is equipped
with this technology, actually responds
more spontaneously and dynamically
when accelerating than the current series-
production RS Coupé with V . FSI
engine, with the added advantage of
superior fuel eciency.
The next advances in the portfolio are
hybrid and plug-in hybrid models with
a variety of technology packages. These
include vehicles such as the Q hybrid
quattro, featuring compact lithium-ion
batteries that are charged by energy
recuperation while in motion. Plug-in
hybrid models such as the A Sportback
e-tron can be charged from a power
socket ; their large batteries have a range
of up to kilometers in electric mode.
The second plug-in hybrid model is
the Q e-tron quattro. Markus Enzinger,
Head of Drive Electrification Develop-
ment, summarizes its vital statistics :
“We combine a latest-generation . TDI
with a powerful electric motor. The diesel
engine and the electric motor deliver
a system output of kW ( hp) and
Nm of system torque. That means
the Q e-tron quattro accelerates from
to km/h in . seconds and uses
just . liters of diesel per kilo-
meters according to the European stan-
dard cycle. The electric range is up
to kilometers.”
Such remarkable statistics are made pos-
sible by new high-tech systems such
as intelligent control to keep both power
units interacting in the most energy-e-
cient way. The predictive eciency assis-
tant evaluates the data it receives from
the MMI Navigation plus system for the
chosen route. On an incline, for instance,
