in its own way, the future of Audi
drive technologies.
The target average fleet consumption of
 grams of CO per kilometer is a key
milestone on the way to the overarching
goal of steadily improving eciency.
This will apply across the EU from 
onwards. “We are already among the
leaders when it comes to eciency,
declares Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Hackenberg.
“But we still have some way to go to
reach our targets by . Conventional
methods – such as lightweight construc-
tion, optimized engines and transmis-
sions as well as further aerodynamic im-
provements – should get us two-thirds of
the way there. Our ecient ultra models
can contribute hugely, too. They are a
big market success and we will be rapid-
ly broadening the range.” Audi expects
its e-tron models to contribute another
 percent. In addition, the use of
alternative fuels, for example, oers
potential for reducing CO emissions.
Dr.-Ing. Stefan Knirsch, Head of Power-
train Development, explains : “We will
keep optimizing our TDI and TFSI en-
gines in terms of fuel injection, forced
induction, friction, thermal manage-
ment and the combustion process. We
believe these areas oer potential for
cutting fuel consumption and therefore
CO emissions by  percent in the next
five years. And we also aim to make
further progress with the eciency of
transmissions and quattro drive.
One of Audi’s tools for reducing CO
emissions is g-tron technology –
the natural-gas drive system for which
the Company produces synthetic meth-
ane at its facility in northern Germany.
The only raw materials required are carbon
dioxide and water ; green power supplies
the process energy. When running on
Audi e-gas, the A Sportback g-tron is
largely CO
-neutral. The five-door pre-
mium compact car is the first Audi g-tron
model. Others will follow.
Audi has defined a wide range of solu-
tions for electrifying the driveline.
We are already
among the leaders
when it comes to
efficiency.
