OPERATING REVIEW
ENVIRONMENT
While the global economic crisis
dominates headlines around
the world, there is still a focus
on future challenges posed by
global warming. Governments
and businesses have not lost
interest in measures to combat
climate change. The Singapore
Airlines Group has not reduced its
focus on long-term environmental
improvements in its operations,
and continues to make its case
for any regulated scheme to
reduce emissions to be global
and consistent.
The European Union is going
ahead with a plan to include
aviation in its Emissions Trading
Scheme from 2012. This would
put further fi nancial burden onto
the industry in respect of
European operations,
disproportionately affecting
airlines serving Europe, and
making it more expensive for
customers to fl y to or from Europe.

warming is a shared responsibility,
which should not burden airlines
unfairly. Despite signifi cant strides
