In 1968, a construction permit was granted for
Arkansas Nuclear One Unit 1, to be built near
Russellville. In the next several years, the
company announced plans for two more nuclear
plants: Waterford 3 in Louisiana
and Grand Gulf in Mississippi.
A dominant musical force at
the time was the
“British invasion.”
Led by the Beatles
in 1964, it drew upon
original American
South forms – blues,
country, Cajun,
ragtime, and jazz –
and brought
them back,
revitalizing
American
popular music and
reinventing rock
and roll.
safest refueling outage in ANO history. The
20-day outage also beat ANO’s own world
record for nuclear reactors of its type. An
Entergy Nuclear team saved an estimated
$13 million and 12 days of additional
downtime by inventing a mechanical seal
used during outages. The invention earned a
Top Industry Practice Award from the
Nuclear Energy Institute in 2003.
During 2003, Entergy Nuclear completed
the forward sale of all planned generation in
2004 from its plants in the Northeast. As of
December 2003, Entergy Nuclear had
contracts to sell 54 percent of its planned
generation in 2005, 45 percent in 2006,
and 28 percent in 2007.
In October 2003, Entergy Nuclear’s
dedicated license renewal team submitted an
application with the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission to extend the operating license
for Arkansas Nuclear One Unit 2 from 2018
to 2038. Working with Framatome-ANP, the
team is also providing license renewal
application services for three plants owned
by other companies.
Nuclear energy provides over 20 percent of America’s electricity
needs and three-fourths of its emissions-free electric generation
– and Entergy is one of the nation’s leading operators of safe,
low-cost nuclear generating plants. We’re expanding the supply
of clean nuclear generation, by increasing the capacity of our
plants through low-cost uprates, and by reducing down time
through improved operations.
Entergy has a track record of improving operations
at underperforming nuclear plants. We’re applying
the expertise we’ve developed to five nuclear units
we’ve acquired in the Northeast. We have
reduced average production costs at our
Northeast plants by 31 percent, compared
with costs before Entergy
ownership, while
maintaining the highest
standards of safety for
employees and the public.
