SAFEWAY INC. 2008 ANNUAL REPORT — PAGE SIXTEEN
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Muscular Dystrophy Association
®
At Safeway, we firmly believe in giving back to the
communities we serve and strive to make them a
better place to live and work.
In 2008, we donated or raised nearly $248 million to
support important causes, such as cancer research
and awareness, education, hunger relief and serving
people with disabilities. Our employees are engaged
throughout the year in raising funds and awareness
for these important causes.
We also are dedicated to the health and well-being
of our customers and employees, offering nutritional
information and educational tools in our stores
and online. FoodFlex (www.safeway.com/foodflex),
an online tool, compares a household’s Club Card
purchases to USDA guidelines and provides a
personalized nutritional guide and healthy tips to
make it easier to make nutritional food choices.
We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint.
Our memberships in the Chicago Climate Exchange
and the California Climate Action Registry are helping
us achieve our goals. We are the nation’s 7th largest
retail purchaser of renewable energy. In 2008, we
purchased enough renewable energy to offset the
electric usage at our corporate offices, our U.S. fuel
stations, and our stores in San Francisco, CA
and Boulder, CO. We are examining all aspects of
our business to enhance sustainable practices
throughout our operations, and we encourage our
suppliers to do the same.
We practice sound business ethics, with bi-annual
employee training and certification in regard to our
Code of Business Conduct. We have also been widely
recognized for our focus on diversity and inclusion by
a broad range of community organizations and
government agencies, including Easter Seals and the
U.S. Department of Labor.
