We are in the video game business, but GameStop isn’t a game; it is a business that we take
seriously. With this comes a responsibility to be a good corporate citizen in the communities
where we operate.
In 2009, GameStop’s sustainability efforts were spotlighted as we were named to
Newsweek
s
“Greenest Big Companies in America” list. This honor focused on our core reuse/recycle
efforts through our Buy-Sell-Trade model. This model provides a huge environmental benefit,
as we are able to refurbish 90% of the games and consoles we take as trade-ins, with 10%
going to other recyclers who keep them out of landfills. Since 2002, we have recycled more
than 220,000 tons of electronic waste. We are in the process of testing more sustainability
initiatives and programs in our stores as we continue to expand our green efforts in 2010.
In the three years that we have teamed up with our charities of choice, GameStop and its
associates have provided more than $1 million dollars to the Make-A-Wish Foundation,
domestically, and the Starlight Children’s Foundation, internationally. Collectively, our
associates have collaborated with these organizations to make more than 600 wishes
come true. Likewise, our Store Support Center in Texas, satellite office in Pennsylvania and
distribution center in Kentucky annually work with local and regional non-profit organizations
that share the common denominator of assisting youth by contributing both time and funding.
In parallel, we are a proud partner with the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) in
North America and Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) in Europe. Our ongoing corporate
commitment to ensure we are selling age-appropriate video games to our customers is top
priority. Our employees are expected to understand the rating systems and adhere to the
ratings when conducting business. This knowledge also allows them to provide expert and
trusted guidance to customers, especially parents, who may not completely understand the
ratings and what they mean.
TAKING RESPONSIBILITY
During the 2009 holiday season, GameStop pledged $1 to the Make-A-Wish
Foundation® for every gift card we sold. GameStop was able to donate
$100,000. Featured on the right, Make-A-Wish® kid Zach, age 9.
