larly low environment impact will be used in both
the Cayenne and the new Panamera. Combining
a gasoline engine with an electric motor offers
the potential of reducing consumption consid-
erably. The Cayenne S Hybrid, for example, in
which the new drive train is currently being test-
ed, always drives in its optimal range, depend-
ing on whether the vehicle is currently in stop-
and-go-trafc, normal around-town driving, or
on a long distance haul.
The drive is based on a parallel full hybrid con-
cept. The electric motor can power the vehic-
le alone – for moderate acceleration – or in
combination with the combustion engine. Com-
pared to the customary hybrid drives on the
market, this design demands a great deal of
technical expertise but, in return, offers numer-
ous important benefits: consumption for inter-
urban and highway journeys can be significantly
reduced as the vehicle can roll at a speed of
up to 130 km/h without any need for the com-
bustion motor. If the driver takes his foot off
the pedal at this speed, the gasoline engine
switches off and the Cayenne continues to roll
without any noticeable change. If, by contrast,
he puts his foot on the gas pedal again, the
gasoline motor accelerates the vehicle without
any delay. Moreover, acceleration and elastici-
ty in the parallel full hybrid are signicantly
better because the electric engines and gaso-
line engine can be used together to boost
acceleration.
Porsche has optimized this concept in cooper-
ation with Volkswagen Group. The gasoline
engine is a 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged engine
with DFI generating 333 hp (245 kW). The au-
tomatic transmission has been stepped up from
six to eight gears. The Cayenne sprints from
0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. These are per-
formance figures that are normally only attain-
ed by the V8 model.
Once it goes into series production, the Cay-
enne S Hybrid will consume less than nine liters
of fuel for 100 kilometers measured on the
