Another way we raise awareness of the value of
diagnostictestingisbyusingourlargedatabase
of test results to identify broad health trends.
During 2006 we issued the Quest Diagnostics
HealthTrendsDiabetesReport,whichfoundthat
between2001and2005peoplewithdiabeteswho
visithealthprofessionalsappearedtobedoinga
betterjobofmanagingtheirdiseaseovertime.
VisualizingtheFuture
Ithasbeen10yearssinceourcompanywasspun
out as an independent company by Corning
Incorporated. During the past decade, we have
learned that leading change is one of the most
challengingthingsourcompanycan do,butwe
havealsoprovedthatitcanalsobeoneofthemost
rewarding. A $10,000 investment in Quest
Diagnostics in January 1997 was worth approxi-
mately$145,000attheendof2006.Duringthat
time, revenues have grown from $1.5 billion to
$6.3billion,andwehavejoinedtheFortune500,
S&P500andDowJonesSustainabilityWorldIndex.
Istronglybelievethatourgreatestachievements
lieahead.Wearetheleaderinagrowingindustry
withonly13%oftheoverallmarket.Wewilltakea
strongcompanyandmakeitstronger.Ourprimary
focusistogrowandstrengthenourclinicaldiag-
nostictestingbusinessbyfocusingonopportunities
incancertestingandesotericclinicaltesting.At
thesametime,wearebeginningtodevelopnew
areasforgrowthinnear-patienttestingandinter-
nationaldiagnostictestingservices.
Wearerespondingtoimportantindustrytrends.
Technologyisenablingdiagnostictestingtotake
place closer than ever to the patient. Imagine
bringing diagnostic testing to remote locations
aroundtheworldwhereelectricityisscarceand
professional medical care even more so. Physi-
ciansareusingadvancedtechnologytoconduct
tests in their offices and at patient bedsides.
Patientsaretakingmore responsibility fortheir
personalhealth,andtheywantfasteranswersto
medicalquestions.Andhospitalsarenowableto
perform more esoteric tests in-house that once
were the exclusive province of the specialized
esoterictestinglaboratory.
This marketisinitsearlystagesandis growing
rapidly.Tohelpusmeetgrowingdemand,earlyin
2007 we acquired HemoCue, a leading global
providerinnear-patienttestingforhemoglobin.
HemoCuebuildsonourpreviousacquisitionsof
FocusDiagnosticsandEnterix.Weareusingour
relationships with physicians to enter near-
patienttesting.
Theglobalmarketfordiagnostictestingislarge,
highly fragmented and growing. The emerging
middleclassinmanydevelopingcountrieshasboth
thedesireandabilitytopayfordiagnostictests.
QuestDiagnosticshastheexpertise,resourcesand
disciplinerequiredtocultivatestrongbusinessin
theseregions.Moreover,wehavetheexperience
to helpshape thediagnostictestingindustry in
emergingmarkets, thereby gaininga solid foot-
holdandastrongcompetitivestance.
Todaywehaveonestronggrowthplatformbased
ondiagnostictestingservices.Near-patienttesting
products andinternationalservices willprovide
twonewareasforgrowthwhichwillbeimportant
contributors for our future. We will be helping
more patients and more doctors more often in
moreplaces.
