OurfiscalyearendsontheSaturdaynearestDecember31
ofeachyear. Ourfirstquarterconsistsof16weeks, and
the other three quarters consist of 12 weeks, with the
exception of the fourth quarter fiscal 2003, which con-
sistedof13weeksduetoour53-weekfiscalyearin2003.
Introduction
WeprimarilyoperatewithintheUnitedStatesautomo-
tiveaftermarketindustry,whichincludesreplacementparts
(excludingtires),accessories,maintenanceitems,batteries
andautomotivechemicalsforcarsandlighttrucks(pickup
trucks, vans, minivans and sport utility vehicles). We
currentlyarethesecondlargestspecialtyretailerofauto-
motiveparts,accessoriesandmaintenanceitemsto“do-it-
yourself,”orDIY,customersintheUnitedStates,basedon
storecountandsales.Ouroperationsareconductedinone
operatingsegment.
We were formed in 1929 and operated as a retailer of
generalmerchandiseuntilthe1980s.Duringthe1980s,we
sharpenedourfocustotargetsalesofautomotivepartsand
accessoriestoDIYcustomers.Fromthe1980stothepresent,
wehavegrownsignificantlyasaresultofstrongcompara-
ble store sales growth, new store openings and strategic
acquisitions, including our 1998 Western Auto Supply
Companyacquisitionandour2001acquisitionofDiscount
AutoParts,orDiscount.Additionally,in1996,webeganto
aggressivelyexpandoursalesto“do-it-for-me,”orDIFM,
customersbyimplementingacommercialdeliveryprogram.
AtJanuary1,2005,weoperated2,617storesthroughout
39statesintheNortheastern,SoutheasternandMidwestern
regionsoftheUnitedStates.Thesestoresoperatedunder
the “Advance Auto Parts” trade name except for certain
storesinthestateofFlorida,whichoperatedunderthe
“AdvanceDiscountAutoParts”or“DiscountAutoParts”
trade names.These storesofferedautomotivereplacement
parts,accessoriesandmaintenanceitems,withnosignifi-
cantconcentrationinanyspecificproductarea.Inaddition,
weoperated35storesunderthe“WesternAuto”tradename,
located primarily in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands,
which offer automotive tires and service in addition to
automotiveparts,accessoriesandmaintenanceitems.
Thefollowingtablesetsforththenumberofnew,closed
and relocated stores and stores with commercial delivery
programs during fiscal 2004, 2003 and 2002. We lease
approximately80%ofourstores.

We anticipate adding approximately 150 to 175 new
storesduring2005primarilythroughnewstoreopenings
andselectiveacquisitions.
ManagementOverview
In 2004, we produced solid growth in our sales and
earningsandendedtheyearwithstrongsalesmomentum
duringthefourthquarter.Webelievethismomentumcon-
firmsthatourinitiativesareworkingandfurthermakesus
believeweareverywellpositionedfor2005andbeyond.
In addition, our industry dynamics continue to become
morepositiveeachyear.Theaverageageofvehiclescon-
tinuestoincreaseandisnowovernineyearsold.Currently,
over60%ofactivelydrivenvehiclesareatleastsixyears
oldandarebeginningtoentertheperiodwhenpartsbegin
tofail.Thecostofreplacementpartsforthesevehiclesare
higher due to thetechnologicalchangesinrecentmodels
and the shift from cars to light trucks and sport utility
vehicles. Beyond the positive fundamentals of our indus-
try,theimplementationofourinitiativesremainsonsched-
ule.Ourspecificfocusistodrivehighersalesperstoreand
thereby leverage our fixed expenses. The initiatives for
drivingthissalesgrowthinclude:
• Continued execution of our category management
program;
• Ongoing implementation of our 2010 store remodeling
program;
