Improving our apparel business provides us with a very meaningful opportunity to bring
customers into our stores more frequently and expand our customer base to provide
incremental sales as we go forward, thereby enhancing our profitability in both the near and
long term. As last year progressed, our apparel sales increased with accelerating momentum,
with strong gains achieved during our final two quarters. This was accomplished due to the
efforts of our merchants, who are working closely with the industry’s leading name-brand
suppliers and our private label developers to build a more appealing presentation of apparel
directed to a consumer looking to purchase for fashion, function or both.
At the same time, we made significant progress creating more eye-catching merchandise
presentations in our stores, including new displays to coordinate our footwear and apparel
selections. This drove improved sales and profit performance last year, which we intend to
build upon over the long term.
