LG Electronics Inc. The
43
rd Annual Report
Mobile Handsets
As a sturdy leader in CDMA technology, we have developed a cdma2000 1x handset
for the first time and successfully passed the CDG2 test (CDMA Development Group 2).
We also introduced a next generation mobile handset equipped with Brew (software
platform for wireless multimedia) as well as a full color display handset. Despite being a
latecomer to GSM technologies, we have successfully developed a GPRS phone and are
now ready to ship to China and Europe. In the IMT2000 field, we are ready with a
multimedia-capable handset that enables bilateral services for trial during the World Cup
here in Korea.
Telecom System
We have successfully developed a cdma2000 1X commercialization system with SK
Telecom for the Vietnamese market as well as a cdma2000 1X EV-DO(Data Only) system
for shipment to Monet Mobile Networks in the U.S. On the W-cdma side, we positioned
ourselves as the unquestionable leader in the domestic market and as frontrunners with
the global competition. Additionally, our new Modem ASIC for W-cdma
commercialization systems received the highest score in the KTiCOM benchmark test for
World Cup service, earning us selection as official provider of W-cdma equipment.
Optical Storage
The most significant achievement of 2001 in optical storage was the development of a
digital video recorder that has four times more storage capacity than a DVD recorder. A
prototype of this 23 gigabyte HD DVR was displayed during the Winter Consumer
Electronics Show and we are working together with other industry leaders to create a
technological standard fit for commercialization. Other major developments in our optical
storage business were a 4.7 gigabyte DVD+RW and the first 32X CD-RW in Korea.
Home Appliance
LGE is the worlds first company to commercialize a linear compressor and the first in
Korea to develop an Inverter SR Motor. These technologies make greater energy
conservation possible for refrigerators and air conditioners. Our innovative Optical Gas
Microoven and Cyclone vacuum cleaner (with no dust filter bag) are new products that
proved great successes, becoming the best sellers among their respective peers.
Home Networks
Home Networks of the future will involve consumer electronics that interact with
each other and are digitally controlled. LGE is working on a standard platform for Korea
which we call LNCP (Living Network Control Protocol) and government, universities and
other domestic consumer product makers are working together to adopt it as a standard
for Home Networking. We have already finished developing the Home Gateway for
internet service and will expand into multimedia home servers and high-end digital TVs.
Implementation of LNCP involves internet refrigerators, digital TV, and digital audio-visual
electronics and success in this project will establish us leaders in the field. Our work on
global standards-development and intellectual property rights is being undertaken through
keen alliances with other global industry leaders.
