2002 Outlook
On the whole, the global economic outlook for 2002 is more encouraging than last
year. A variety of factors lead to a promise of even better growth prospects; continuing
interest rate cuts, pump-priming in developed countries, the World Cup in Korea and the
beginning of digital broadcasting, among others. Risks, however, still exist. Signs of US
economic recovery are only now beginning to appear and changes in Chinese business are
making markets more fiercely competitive. With these things in mind I would like to
employ the following guidelines in leading the Company forward in 2002:
First, we must strengthen our “digital” competitiveness. The changing marketplace
rewards innovation, and the “digital LG” ideal that we have aspired to since 1999 is alive
and well. We have an undeniable competitive edge in display technologies such as
Cathode-Ray Tubes (CRT), Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) and Plasma Display Panels
(PDP). By exploiting these advantages and developing new and better digital TVs,
appliances and next-generation mobile equipment we can maintain our position at the
forefront of the worlds electronics markets.
Second, we will stress cash and profit-oriented management strategies. Corporate
internal flexibility is necessary in a volatile world economy, and intelligent risk-management
