Research & Development
Today, customers prefer cars that offer safety, comfort, and
convenience, and global car makers are particularly focused on the
development of eco-friendly automobiles to meet tightened global
environment regulations. Kia Motors has formalized its “2020 Fuel
Efficiency Improvement Roadmap” with the goal of improving its
vehicles’ average fuel efficiency by 25% from their current levels by
2020. The roadmap is focused on three key policies: development of
next-generation powertrains, weight reduction of key models, and
expansion of our eco-friendly car lineup. By successfully promoting these
key policies, Kia plans to continue securing concrete advantages in the
increasingly intensifying global competition for improving fuel efficiency.
EcoDynamics is Kia’s eco-friendly sub-brand which
was launched in 2009. The name combines ecology,
economy and dynamics to reect our recognition of the
importance of the global environment, ecosystem and
people coexisting in harmony. In order to achieve this, we
have added the concept of sustainable mobility to our
value system in the production of our automobiles.
Eco-friendly technology is the future
Eco-friendly models
Kia Motors’ eco-friendly car lineup includes the K5 (Optima)
Hybrid, K7 Hybrid, Soul EV and Ray EV. The K5 Hybrid set a
Guinness World Record by driving cross-country through 48
states in the U.S. (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) over 16 days.
It successfully travelled about 12,710 km with an average
fuel economy of 27.5 km/ℓ to set a milestone of lowest fuel
consumption in the hybrid car category of the Guinness World
Records. This achievement outshined the previous Guinness
Record of about 25.2 km/ℓ by the Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 Diesel
(MT) in 2009.
In 2015, we plan to mass produce the next generation K5
Hybrid while continuing to introduce other eco-friendly cars to
comply with tightening fuel efciency regulations in the global
market. In addition, Kia Motors will expand its eco-friendly
car lineup, ranging from hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) to fuel
cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), from the current four models to
eleven models by 2020. It plans to launch its rst plug-in HEV
in 2016 and will continue enhancing its eco-friendly product
competitiveness by increasing the maximum driving range of
the Soul EV which was introduced in 2014.
1. K5 Hybrid 500h
The K5 Hybrid 500h, featuring a parallel hard-type hybrid system,
has a 2.0ℓ MPI engine and a 35 kW electric motor boasting a
maximum output of 150 hp and maximum torque of 18.3 kg∙m.
As our rst gasoline hybrid midsize sedan, it features fuel efciency
of 16.8 km/ℓ, exceeding that of regular subcompact cars. The
K5 hybrid has a sophisticated and distinctive style, excellent
acceleration, low noise, and top-level eco-friendliness.
2. K7 Hybrid 700h
The K7 Hybrid 700h also uses the hard-type hybrid system, which
enables the car to be driven by motor alone at low speeds. This eco-
friendly D-segment passenger car is sophisticated, comfortable
and highly efcient. Equipped with a 6-speed transmission that
enhances fuel efciency and driving performance, the K7 Hybrid
700h features fuel efciency of 16 km/ℓ, similar to that of the K3
(Cerato/Forte).
