Corporate responsibility
Reducing the impact of our business on the environment
Living corporate responsibility is a key component of our Group strategy. e
importance this has for our business activities is demonstrated in our Code of Conduct,
which is guided by the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the
United Nations  Global Compact. Moreover, we systematically take into account
the various interests of our stakeholders and work to reduce the impact of our business
on the environment. In doing so, we aim to strike a balance between our economic
goals and society’s requirements by putting our experience and global presence to good
use to help people and the environment. We concentrate above all on environmental
protection and we are committed to our responsibility as a corporate citizen.
Slight increase in  emissions due to stronger demand for air transport
We want to run a sustainable business. With our environmental protection pro-
gramme GoGreen we are anchoring this goal throughout the entire Group. Under
this programme we are reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, improving our 
eciency and lowering costs. ese eorts are also helping us to tap into new markets
and business opportunities. Furthermore, we help our customers achieve their own
environmental targets with “green” products. By the year  we intend to improve
the  eciency of our own operations and those of our subcontractors by   com-
pared with .
We quantify our  emissions based upon the principles of the  Protocol Corporate
Standard. In our European air freight business, this also includes the requirements of the
European Union Emissions Trading System  . In , our direct (Scope )
and indirect (Scope ) carbon emissions were approximately . million tonnes (pre-
vious year: . million tonnes). ese emissions were a result of the fuel consumption of
our eet and energy consumption in our buildings. Direct  emissions rose slightly
despite the fact that our buildings used less energy and our road transport vehicles con-
sumed less fuel. is was due mainly to the increased demand for air transport, which
to a large extent we operate ourselves.
