Depreciation, amortisation and impairment losses declined
by   million year-on-year to  , million.  e reduction is
related, amongst other things, to the restructuring of the  express
business in the previous year, which recognised part of the depre-
ciation, amortisation and impairment losses prospectively.
Depreciation, amortisation and impairment losses include
impairment losses of   million (previous year:   million).
At segment level, the impairment losses on non-current assets
( excluding the impairment of goodwill) were as follows:
 million of the impairment losses in the previous year
were due to the insolvency of Arcandor. A further   million
related to impairment losses on property, plant and equipment
inthe  express business and   million to impairment losses

Sta costs relate mainly to wages, salaries and compensation,
as well as all other bene ts paid to employees of the Group for their
services in the year under review. Social security contributions
relate in particular to statutory social security contributions paid
by employers.
Retirement bene t expenses consist of additions to provi-
sions for pensions and similar obligations as well as contributions
to de ned contribution pension plans. Detailed information can be
found in Notes  and .
e average number of Group employees in the year under
review, broken down by employee group, was as follows:
e employees of companies acquired or disposed of during
the year under review were included rateably. Calculated as full-
time equivalents, the number of employees as at  December 
