Nevertheless, Mazda’s consolidated results fell short of the previous year’s levels because of lower sales
volumes and the yen’s appreciation. Looking at sales volumes in major markets, despite the introduction of the
new Mazda Biante, lower sales of existing models resulted in a 14.5% decline in domestic sales, to 219,000
units. North American sales were down 14.4%, to 347,000 units, on declines in sales of models including the
Mazda CX-7. Europe recorded a 1.5% decline, to 322,000 units. In China, sales grew 33.2%, to 135,000 units,
led by the Mazda6, while other markets saw a 12.8% decline, to 238,000 units. Total global sales declined 7.5%,
to 1,261,000 units.
Consolidated wholesales for the year were 123,000 units (9.9%) lower, at 1,116,000 units.
Results by Geographic Segment
(Japan)
Net sales declined ¥652.8 billion (24.2%), to ¥2,045.4 billion, and operating income was ¥202.7 billion lower,
recording a ¥95.0 billion operating loss. This was primarily the result of lower vehicle wholesales and the yen’s
appreciation.
(North America)
Net sales were down ¥294.2 billion (30.1%), at ¥684.8 billion, but operating income rose ¥19.5 billion (325.7%),
to ¥25.5 billion. Although net sales declined on lower vehicle wholesales and a stronger yen, adjustments in
export prices from Japan raised operating income.
(Europe)
Net sales were down ¥242.4 billion (27.1%), to ¥652.5 billion, with a ¥9.4 billion (52.2%) decline in operating
income, to ¥8.6 billion, mainly reflecting lower vehicle wholesales and a stronger yen.
(Other areas)
Net sales declined ¥110.8 billion (32.4%), to ¥231.1 billion, and operating income was ¥11.1 billion (53.4%)
lower, at ¥9.7 billion, mainly reflecting lower vehicle wholesales and a stronger yen.
Net Sales
Consolidated net sales declined ¥939.9 billion (27.0%), to ¥2,535.9 billion. Of this decline, lower sales volume and
a deteriorated model mix accounted for 11.0%, the yen’s appreciation accounted for 7.0% and changes in
