STRENGTHENING SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE
For the third year in a row, AARP members’
advocacy persuaded Congress not to cut
the Social Security and Medicare benefits
they earned through hard work and their
tax contributions.
AARP’s You’ve Earned a Say campaign
provided a powerful platform for peo-
ple to study the issues, then share their
views.
While Washington was snarled in
gridlock, people gathered at hundreds of
nonpartisan AARP-sponsored discussions
from coast to coast to talk, ask questions
and find common ground.
Members voiced strong opposition to
proposed changes in the way inflation
adjustments are calculated for Social
Security and veterans’ benefits. Thanks
to AARP’s extensive advocacy, consumers
realized that the so-called “chained CPI”
was just a fancy Washington term for
reducing retirement benefits relied on by
retirees, widows, children, veterans and
persons with disabilities. If chained CPI
had been adopted, Social Security bene-
