2013 AARP ANNUAL REPORT — 29
Alleviating hunger, teaching children how to
read and helping millions of people to file
their tax returns are just a few of the ways in
which AARP members give back.
With a lifetime of wisdom and know-
how, these volunteers are uniquely
equipped to make life better for others.
DRIVE TO END HUNGER
Despite all the food in America, more
than 9 million older adults do not get
enough to eat. Thanks to Drive to End
Hunger—a major initiative of AARP and
its charitable affiliate, AARP Founda-
tion— nearly 30 million meals have been
donated since 2011 to local organizations
working to feed hungry seniors.
In Virginia, for example, more than
100,000 pounds of food were gathered
through the AARP Virginia Community
Food Drive, which involved members,
faith-based groups, the Virginia Retired
Teachers Association, and other commu-
nity organizations.
In Ohio, Drive to End Hunger teamed
up with all 252 Walgreens stores state-
wide in September to raise donations
for low-salt, low-sugar peanut butter for
MULTIMEDIA: Hungry in the West End,
a compelling eight-part Web series
produced by AARP’s Rhode Island com-
munications director, explored senior
hunger in a hard-hit neighborhood of
Providence. The award-winning docu-
mentary was funded with a grant from
AARP Foundation.
