fits would have been reduced by a whop-
ping $127 billion over 10 years.
Since Social Security is a self-financed
program, not a piggy bank for deficit
reduction, AARP called on Washington
to leave Social Security out of the deficit
debate and instead have a separate con-
versation about responsible solutions that
keep the promise to seniors, their kids
and grandkids.
On the health front, AARP emphasized
that the key to strengthening Medicare
is reducing costs throughout the whole
U.S. health system. Responsible solutions
backed by AARP included reducing pre-
scription drug costs, improving coordina-
tion of care and cracking down on waste
and inefficiency.

Social Security and Medicare.
