Many of today’s middle-class workers will
not have a middle-class retirement unless
America reverses the trends that threaten
their financial stability.
That disturbing finding from the AARP
Public Policy Institute’s ongoing “Middle
Class Security Project” laid the ground-
work for AARP’s efforts to equip people
to earn, manage and protect enough mon-
ey for a lifetime.
MAKING UTILITY COSTS
MORE AFFORDABLE
Residential consumers saved approx-
imately $2.4 billion on home energy
bills and preserved telephone consumer
protections in 2013, thanks to vigorous
“watchdog” efforts by AARP staff and
volunteer advocates.
These pro-consumer utility victories re-
sulted in part from members raising their
voices for fair, affordable and reliable util-
ity service. Successes included preventing
higher electric rates for consumers who
are home during the day (Nevada), block-
ing natural gas companies from charging
residential consumers more so large
businesses could pay less (Kansas) and
