Medicare for Dummies book was pub-
lished in November.
>Most people have not taken steps to
plan for health care costs in retire-
ment, according to AARP research. To
help them plan ahead, AARP devel-
oped a free, online Health Care Costs
Calculator based on millions of actual
insurance claims. To ensure privacy, no
registration is required and no person-
al data is collected.
NAVIGATING THE
AFFORDABLE CARE ACT
The Affordable Care Act was a con-
fusing puzzle for many people. To help
consumers “find your way around the
health care law, AARP undertook an
extensive public education campaign.
Information included articles in the mag-
azine and AARP Bulletin, new brochures
and fact sheets, telephone- and web-based
presentations on the law and opportuni-
ties for consumers to pose questions to
AARP experts. AARP also assisted with
the training of Spanish-speaking volun-
teers called “promotores, who distributed
information to more than 12,000 people.
In addition, the innovative online
AARP Health Law Answers made it easy
for people of all ages to understand what
the health care law meant for them and
their families.
MEDICAID EXPANSION
Some 5.8 million people (including 1.2
million aged 50 – 64 with low incomes)
became eligible for health coverage,
HEALTH WITH HUMOR: AARP created 12
electronic cards in English and Spanish
used by parents to encourage their adult
children to sign up for health insurance
under the Affordable Care Act.
