2013 AARP ANNUAL REPORT — 23
for everyone. Over 17 million people re-
side in the 20 “age-friendly communities”
where AARP is working in cooperation
with the World Health Organization to
help communities meet the needs of resi-
dents as they age.
For example, AARP helped establish
Grandparents Park in Wichita, Kansas,
where walking trails, playgrounds and
comfortable benches bring the genera-
tions together for fun and fitness.
AARP helped 564,000 drivers of all
ages learn how to stay safe and confi-
dent on the road through AARP Driver
Safety courses, CarFit check-ups, and We
Need to Talk seminars. More than 4,000
dedicated volunteers made it all happen.
More than 15 million people have com-
pleted the course since 1979.
SAVING HOMES,
PROTECTING LEGACIES
Hundreds of older, low-income home-
owners in Washington, D.C. avoided los-
ing their homes to foreclosure, thanks in
part to diligent casework by Legal Coun-
sel for the Elderly, a charitable affiliate of
AARP. Overall, LCE won $7.3 million in
benefits and legal victories for clients.
