2013 AARP ANNUAL REPORT — 19
thanks to Medicaid expansion laws in 21
states where AARP advocated for change.
Expanding Medicaid gives people with-
out insurance access to preventive care
that can save lives, reduce the need for
expensive emergency room care and ease
emergency room overcrowding.
LONG-TERM CARE
More than 100 improvements in long-
term care and caregiving policies were
adopted in states nationwide, thanks to
AARP’s support. As a result, more adults
can access access quality care in their
homes and communities. In Rhode Is-
land, for example, one new law required
an assessment of caregivers’ needs, while
another created a family leave insurance
program that provides both employment
protections and financial security.
FOSTERING INNOVATION
AND INFORMATION
Wearable devices and smartphone
apps make it easier for consumers to keep
track of medications, monitor their health
and keep track of loved ones’ health. To
speed up the availability of such prod-
ucts, AARP’s Innovation@50+ team
networked with venture capital firms and
issued a report, “Digital Health Insights
for the 50+ Market, in collaboration with
the venture firm Startup Health.
AARP members seized opportunities
to try out some of the new devices and
offer candid feedback to the innovators
during AARP Life@50+ events in Las
Vegas and Atlanta.
MULTIMEDIA: Members’ candid feed-
back during Life@50+ helped innovators
build better health care products.
