2013 AARP ANNUAL REPORT — 40
Boomers are the fastest-growing segment
of smartphone owners. To provide infor-
mation when and how members want it,
a free iPad app brought AARP The Maga-
zine and the AARP Bulletin to life through
exclusive content and interactive tools at
every turn. For example, the app allowed
users to read book excerpts, sample new
music, take interactive quizzes and share
stories via social media.
DYNAMIC SOCIAL
MEDIA PRESENCE
An increasing number of people 50-
plus get their news and entertainment
from social media platforms. Original
video series produced by AARP for its
official YouTube channel featured Movies
for Grownups, personal takes on technol-
ogy by social media icon George Takei
and a Spanish-language cooking show
starring Denisse Oller. Annotations in the
videos invited viewer feedback, enhanc-
ing the experience.
ENTERTAINMENT
For several decades, AARP has en-
couraged the motion picture industry to
create more quality films for viewers over
50, such as through an awards program
and reviews of Movies for Grownups in
AARP The Magazine, on radio and online.
The first AARP Movies for Grownups
Film Festival drew large crowds and a gal-
axy of stars to Los Angeles in September.
AARP also created opportunities for
the public to enjoy live plays that carried
a social message, including Nisei Widow’s
George Takei, who played Mr. Sulu on
Star Trek, is a social media star. His smart,
irreverent new series on AARPs official You-
Tube channel, “Takei’s Take,” explored his
unique views of technology. Photo credit:
