Compensationexpenseincreasedby$20.3millioninscal2003.Othersignicantscal2003expense
increaseswerefortravel,promotion,marketingsupportprogramsandITsupport,infrastructureand
maintenanceexpenses.
Inscal2003,baddebtexpensehasdecreased$5.5millionversustheprioryear.Fiscal2002included
anet$3.9millionexpensewithrespecttoalargecustomer’sChapter11bankruptcyprotectionling
andrelatedtradereceivablewrite-off.Salescommissionstowirelessserviceproviderandagentswere
alsoreducedinscal2003.
Amortization
Amortizationexpenseonaccountofcapitalandintangibleassetsincreasedby$12.9millionto
$30.4millionfortheyearendedMarch1,2003comparedto$17.5millionfortheprioryear.The
Companymadeexpenditureswithrespecttocapitalandintangibleassetsof$39.7millionand
$31.0millionrespectivelyinscal2003versus$73.9millionand$7.1millioninthepreviousyear.
Majorcapitalassetadditionsin2003includedproductionequipmentandtooling,researchand
developmentcomputersandequipmentandcomputerinfrastructurefortheBlackBerrysolution,
aswellascapitalequipmentrequiredfortheexpansionofoperationsinternationally.Additionally,
RIMcontinuedtoinvestinthefurtheracquisition,congurationandimplementationofitsfully
integratedenterpriseresourceplanningSAPsoftware.
Duringscal2003,theCompany’sacquisitionofintangibleassetsincludedlicencepayments
amountingto$18.7million,patentsof$12.3millionandthepurchaseof$7.3millionoftechnology
aspartoftheCompany’sfourcorporateacquisitionsinscal2003(seenotes6and7totheConsolidated
FinancialStatements).
RestructuringCharges
Duringthethirdquarterof2003,aspartofaplan(the“Plan”)toimproveoperatingresultsbystream-
liningitsoperationsandreducingexpenses,theCompanyrecordedrestructuringchargesof$6.5
millionwhichconsistedofworkforcereductioncostsacrossalloftheorganization’semployeegroups
andexcessfacilitiesandrelatedcostsforoperatingleasecommitmentswithrespecttospaceno
longerneededtosupportongoingoperations.Seenote13–RestructuringCharges.
AllemployeesidentiedinconnectionwiththeworkforcereductioncomponentofthePlanwere
terminatedonoraboutNovember12,2002.TheCompanyexpectstocompletetheremaining
elementsofthePlanduringthersthalfofscal2004.
TheCompanyexpectscostsavingsasaresultofthesecostrestructuringmeasurestobeapproxi-
mately$20–25millionperyear.Thesavingsbeganinthescalfourthquarterof2003,withthefull
impactofsavingsanticipatedintherstquarterof2004.

DuringNovember2001,theCompanywasservedwithacomplaintledbyNTP,Inc.(“NTP”)alleging
thattheCompanyinfringedoneightofitspatents(the“NTPmatter”).
Fiscal2003SecondQuarter
Duringthesecondquarterofscal2003,theCompanyrecordedanexpenseof$4.9millionforits
currentandestimatedfuturecostswithrespecttoongoinglegalfeesfortheNTPmatter.
