Grossresearchanddevelopmentexpenditures,primarilycomposedofsalariesfortechnicalpersonnel,
costsofrelatedengineeringmaterials,softwaretoolsandrelatedinformationtechnologyinfrastruc-
turesupport,aswellassubcontractedresearchanddevelopmentcosts,increasedby$15.5millionor
31.3%to$65.0millionor21.2%ofrevenueintheyearendedMarch1,2003comparedto$49.5million
or16.8%ofrevenueinthepreviousyear.Continuedfocusonthedevelopmentof2.5Ghandhelds
forEurope,AsiaandNorthAmerica,togetherwithongoingworkontheBlackBerryplatform,have
accountedformostofthisincrease.
Compensationaccountsforthemajorityoftheyearoveryearincreaseat$11.0million.Otherincreases
wereinexternalprofessionalservices,travelandengineeringmaterialsconsumed.
Netresearchanddevelopmentexpense,afteraccountingforgovernmentfundingintheform
ofexpensereimbursementsandscienticresearchinvestmenttaxcredits(“ITC’s”)inscal2003of
$9.0million(2002–$12.1million),represented$55.9millionor18.2%ofrevenueversus$37.4million
or12.7%ofrevenueinthepreviousyear.
TheCompany’scurrentdevelopmentagreementwithTechnologyPartnershipsCanada(“TPC”)was
relatedtoathree-yearresearchanddevelopmentprojectunderwhichtotalcontributionsfromTPC
wouldbeamaximumof$23.3million.TheCompanyhasrecordedallofthecontributionsasatMarch
1,2003.NofurtherTPCfundingreimbursementsareduetoRIMunderthisagreement.TheCompanyis
continuouslypursuinggovernmentprograms,buttherecanbenoassuranceastoanyfuturefunding
atthistime.
GovernmentfundingintheformofITC’sforthecurrentscalyearwerenil–seeIncomeTaxesand
notes8and12(a)totheConsolidatedFinancialStatements.
Selling,MarketingandAdministrationExpenses
Selling,marketingandadministrativeexpenseswere$118.0millionforthecurrentyearcompared
to$102.4millionforscal2002,anincreaseof$15.6million.
Consistentwithitslong-termstrategicobjectives,RIMcontinuedtoincreaseitsexpenselevels
tosupportBlackBerryandothersalesanddistributionchannelsinthefollowingareas:
• increasedBlackBerrysalesandmarketinginitiativeswiththeCompany’scarriercustomers
• brandingpenetrationinEuropeandtheAsiaPacicregion(“AsiaPac”)
• continuedfocusonjointchannelmarketingactivities
• internationalsalesandmarketinginfrastructureinAsiaPac,AustraliaandSouthAmerica
• increasedinfrastructureandstafngincustomerfullmentactivitiessuchascallcentre,orderentry
andprocessing,enhancementstobillingsystems,etc.
• increasedinfrastructureandstafngtosupporttheCompany’srevenuegrowthopportunities
inlicensingBlackBerryConnectandTechnicalSupportServices
