permits life-long learning and also vo-
cational development along the entire
process chain. Varied work and learning
experience not only promotes flexibili-
ty; it also influences the process of age-
ing quite considerably. Ageing is a so-
cial process as well as a sociological
one. A working life without scope to de-
velop, with severely restricted learning
challenges, will merely make people
want to retire as early as possible. Work-
ing conditions that promote motivation
and commitment also permit a longer
working life.
When you consider both of these chal-
lenges to human resources – better-
qualified people who have reached the
glass ceiling and people of more limited
performance who need longer breaks or
different working cycles – doesn’t that
mean people will have to be content
with stagnating or falling income?
WIDUCKEL: The issue of demographics
becomes relevant at two points in the
process of collectively negotiated pay.
Let’s look at working life first: I can’t
imagine anyone still working on vehicle
assembly at 67. But if we are to make an
