Award-winning
TT body
The Automotive Circle
International presented
Audi with the EuroCar-
Body Award in recognition
of its innovative body
concept for the Audi TT.
The sports coupé scored
highly for its “Audi Space
Frame” (ASF), beating
13 competitors from all
over the world. The
developers used a hybrid-
construction ASF for the
very first time in the body
of the new TT. It represents
an ingenious combination
of aluminium and steel
components. Thanks to
the use of hybrid construc-
tion, the TT bodyshell
weighs around a third less
of what it would if it were
made entirely of steel.
Building a car is like tailoring a made-to-measure suit.
Taking that conviction as its starting point, Audi Den-
mark invited four design students to customise the new
Audi TT Coupé as they saw fit in a project entitled “The
tailormade Audi”. They spent three weeks putting their
visions into practice, hand in hand with designers from
Audi, Bang & Olufsen, Georg Jensen and munthe plus
simonsen. The Danish design company unveiled the cus-
tomised coupé as a feature of its exhibition entitled “Fas-
cination of Transport”. Then Audi Denmark auctioned off
the car at the end of the year, with most of the proceeds
being used to fund scholarships for young designers.
The design world meets every year
at “Design Miami” in Florida to pres-
ent and assess the latest trends
from the worlds of art and lifestyle.
Reflecting its trend-setting role in
automotive design, Audi participat-
ed as exclusive vehicle sponsor and
caused a stir with its spectacular
installation based around the R8*
sports car.The sculpture “Ignition R8”,
standing around ten metres tall, sym-
bolises the ignition in the mid-engine
of the Audi R8 as the “Big Bang” of dy-
namism. “Our new sports car is made
part of the design and art scene by
an object that evokes the sheer
sportiness of the model in an artisti-
cally sophisticated way,” explained
Head of Design Walter de’Silva.
