TFSI: high-performance and economical
A global engine
Convinced of the success of the new 1.8-litre TFSI:
Wolfgang Hatz, Head of Powertrain Development
for the Volkswagen Group.
The Head of Powertrain Development for the
Volkswagen Group, Wolfgang Hatz, regards the
combination of a turbocharged petrol engine
and direct injection as the “concept of the future”.
The new 1.8-litre TFSI engine, appearing first in
the Audi A3 and the new Audi A5, serves to confirm
this prediction.

The complex in which Audi’s
engine developers are based at
Ingolstadt is a veritable micro-
cosm. A maze of stairways, offices and
workshops, many of them spacious and
bright, others tucked away in obscurity,
epitomise AUDI AG’s rapid-fire growth
over the past few decades. The man at
the helm of this nerve centre of the
company’s operations is Wolfgang Hatz,
born 1959, Head of Powertrain Develop-
ment at AUDI AG and since February 1,
2007 for the Volkswagen Group.
One particular storey, in a grey-floored
open-plan office, is home to the CAD de-
velopers. This is where the ultramodern
engines first begin to take shape. What
exactly were the main objectives of “De-
velopment Order No. 888”, issued four
years ago? Hatz enumerates them: “As
well as plenty of power and torque, am-
ple refinement, low fuel consumption
and the potential to meet the most
