60 TECHNOLOGY& RESEARCH
For the foreseeable future, it is
diesel technology that can make
the largest contribution toward
reducing CO2emissions.The world’s
cleanest diesel technology, to be
introduced by Audi from mid-2008,
will combine TDI engines with
what is known as an ultra low
emission system. It raises the
tried-and-tested TDI principle of
turbocharged direct injection to a
new level, and already meets fu-
ture emissions standards. The
brand-new TDI generation’s status
(see engine diagram, right) as the
ultimate clean-running, hi-tech
diesel is assured by significant
reductions in emissions thanks
to the DeNOx catalytic converter
and particulate filter. Nitrogen ox-
ide emissions can be cut by up
to 90 percent. The catalytic con-
verter transforms nitrous oxides
into harmless nitrogen and water
vapor with the assistance of a bio-
degradable additive.
