Ritchie Herbert, Canadian
Amid the bubbling fountains and tall
linden trees shading the café tables,
the hustle and bustle of the city magic-
ally disappears. “This is a gem,” says the
Canadian, a resident of Ingolstadt for
16 years, of Café Hohe Schule. “Hi
Ritchie. The usual?” asks the waitress.
Here, in the middle of the old town, is
the local newspaper’s photo reporter’s
favorite place to enjoy a cappuccino
between press conferences and theater
premieres. “Hello Ritchie,” waves a fe-
male passer-by. “See you at the street
party.” “Practically everyone knows me,”
smiles the 44-year-old. Hardly surpris-
ing, as he is a local reporter and, what’s
more important to the locals, used to
play ice hockey for the local team, ERC
Ingolstadt. Herbert skated for the “Pan-
thers” for three years, earning a few
Mexican waves from packed-out ter-
races. Even when he’s not on an editorial
assignment, Herbert enjoys walking
around “his” Ingolstadt with a camera –
there is no shortage of photo opportuni-
ties. A former student of art history, he
eventually moved to Europe in 1992, at-
tracted by the culture. No doubt about
it, this 1,200-year-old fortified city is cer-
tainly brimming with cultural history.
“Just yesterday, I rediscovered two old
house doors with amazing decorations,”
enthuses the reporter from Toronto.
