UBISOFT ANNUAL REPORT 2009
ma n a G e m e n t r e p o r t 01
1.1.4.3.1.6 Processing waste
Many subsidiaries have already introduced sorting systems, often in partnership with local authorities. As of June 2009,
for example, the Montreal studio was in the process of removing all individual waste baskets in favour of shared recycling bins,
in order to sort waste and minimise the burying of non-recyclable waste as well as the business’s environmental impact.
1.1.4.3.1.7 Processing and recycling unmarketable products
Subsidiaries are directly responsible for scrapping at distribution platforms. This is organised by suppliers or subsidiaries’
warehouses.
In 2008-09, Ubisoft destroyed or recycled around 69 tonnes of unmarketable products. This represents about 0.5% of total
production.
The various destruction tasks (grinding or compacting), carried out under the supervision of ofcial bodies, was outsourced to
external companies for:
• burning (in Japan for whatever cannot be recovered), or
• burial (in Italy and the United States), or
recycling (in the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Canada, France, Japan, Switzerland and the Netherlands).
The destruction of products in France is carried out by a company specialising in recycling CDs, DVDs, computer disks and all
types of plastic electronic media. The products are rst ground down and sorted before being transformed into ne particles and
resold to the plastic processing sector.
1.1.4.3.1.8 Involving suppliers in a responsible, environmentally friendly approach
Ubisoft uses environmentally-concerned suppliers.
The main production facilities of Ubisoft’s assemblers in the EMEA zone are ISO 9001 certied. As such, they comply with the
“Safety and Quality” process. Two thirds of them even have ISO 14001 certication, which specically relates to the environment.
This standard includes the Company's efforts to:
• minimise the harmful effects of its activities on the environment, and
• continually improve its environmental performance.
Ubisoft EMEA’s manufacturing department is currently undertaking an audit of its main suppliers to nd out their position on
environmental issues, and is studying possible courses of action.
1.1.4.3.2 Raising awareness and sharing sound environmental practices
1.1.4.3.2.1 Applying sound ecological practices at a group level
At a Group level, Ubisoft identies sound ecological practices that follow the principles of its environmental policy. These sound
practices may be inspired by initiatives already implemented at subsidiaries or other companies with exemplary environmental
behaviour.
The Group favours initiatives that offer a pragmatic response to environmental challenges, proved their effectiveness and help
streamlining operations and investment.
