Item 1. BUSINESS
A. Description of Business
CIGNA Corporation and its subsidiaries constitute one of the largest investor-owned health service organizations in the United
States. Its subsidiaries are major providers of health care and related benefits, the majority of which are offered through the
workplace, including: health care products and services; group disability, life and accident insurance; and workers’ compensation case
management and related services. The Company also has certain inactive businesses, including a run-off reinsurance operation.
CIGNA Corporation had consolidated shareholders’ equity of $3.6 billion and assets of $41.4 billion as of December 31, 2008, and
revenues of $19.1 billion for the year then ended. CIGNA’s major insurance subsidiary, Connecticut General Life Insurance
Company (“CG Life”), traces its origins to 1865. CIGNA Corporation was incorporated in the State of Delaware in 1981.
As used in this document, “CIGNA” and the “Company” may refer to CIGNA Corporation itself, one or more of its subsidiaries,
or CIGNA Corporation and its consolidated subsidiaries. CIGNA Corporation is a holding company and is not an insurance company.
Its subsidiaries conduct various businesses, which are described in this Form 10-K.
CIGNA’s revenues are derived principally from premiums, fees, mail order pharmacy, other revenues and investment income.
The financial results of CIGNA’s businesses are reported in the following segments:
Health Care;
Disability and Life;
International;
Run-off Reinsurance; and
Other Operations.

America (“GAAP”), unless otherwise indicated. Certain reclassifications have been made to prior years’ financial information to
conform to the 2008 presentation. Industry rankings and percentages set forth herein are for the year ended December 31, 2007,
unless otherwise indicated. Unless otherwise noted, statements set forth in this document concerning CIGNA’s rank or position in an
industry or particular line of business have been developed internally, based on publicly available information.

C. Health Care
CIGNA’s Health Care segment (“CIGNA HealthCare”) offers insured and self-funded medical, dental, behavioral health, vision,
and prescription drug benefit plans, health advocacy programs and other products and services that may be integrated to provide
