7 AARP 2012 YEAR IN REVIEW
Many participants said they
appreciated AARP’s “just the facts
approach. In the end, members
said that its time to come together
to find sensible solutions to the
challenges facing Medicare and
Social Security based on people’s
needs, not just budget numbers.
SOCIAL SECURITY
& MEDICARE
Thanks to vigorous civic
engagement, Americans 50+
helped persuade Congress not to
make harmful cuts in Medicare,
Medicaid and Social Security
benefits as part of federal deficit
reduction. Access to doctors was
also preserved when Congress held
steady the rates paid to physicians
who treat Medicare patients.
VOTER EDUCATION
Voters learned about candidates
views on key health and financial
security issues through AARP-
sponsored candidate debates,
forums and voters’ guides. Many
of the public events were held on
college campuses, to engage young
people in securing their futures.
President Barack Obama and U.S.
Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin shared
their views during live presentations
at Life@50+ | AARP’s National
Event & Expo in New Orleans. Their
remarks reached AARP members
across the country via live streaming
in English, Spanish and closed-
captioning.
HEALTH CARE PROTECTIONS
In June, AARP was pleased that
AARP hosted over
community
conversations on
Medicare and
Social Security.
