4 AARP 2012 YEAR IN REVIEW
2012 was an important year for
AARP members and all people 50-
plus and their families. Our priority
was fighting to help people achieve
health and financial security and live
their best life.
We asked our members how to
protect Social Security and Medicare
for future generations. More than 6.5
million people spoke out through
our You’ve Earned a Say initiative.
Their message was clear: Social
Security should not be cut to deal
with the budget deficit, and Social
Security and Medicare are important
to retirement security—today, and
for kids and grandkids later on.
Throughout the year, we moved
these issues to the forefront of
the national agenda by bringing
these messages to our nation’s
leaders and political candidates. In
September, all eyes were focused
on AARP at our National Event and
Expo in New Orleans for remarks
on health and financial security by
President Obama and Congressman
Paul Ryan.
We also focused attention on
middle-class Americans as our Public
Policy Institute launched a major
examination of the dynamics driving
the decline of the middle class.
Our team concluded that unless we
reverse these trends, 30 percent of
those currently in the middle class
will become “low-income” retirees,
due mainly to rising health care costs
and financial insecurity.
