22 AARP 2012 YEAR IN REVIEW
Fellow at Harvard University, serves as
AARP Board Vice Chair. She is chair
of the Member and Social Impact
Committee, and a member of the
Compensation Committee and the
AARP Services Inc. Board of
Directors. Before retiring in 2011 as
president and CEO of the Visiting
Nurse Service of New York, Ms.
Raphael was a director at Mount Sinai
Medical Center and executive deputy
commissioner in charge of New York
City’s Medicaid and public assistance
programs. She chairs the New York
eHealth Collaborative, the Long Term
Quality Alliance and the National
Quality Forum Workgroup on
Post-Acute and Long Term Care.
A. James Forbes, Jr.
(Secretary/Treasurer).
Jim Forbes, a financial
executive residing in
New York, is AARP’s
Secretary/Treasurer. He
chairs the Audit and Finance
Committee and also serves on the
Compensation Committee.
Previously, Mr. Forbes was audit chair
and treasurer for the AARP
Foundation Board of Directors. Mr.
Forbes has been an interim executive
services partner in the not-for-profit
practice at Tatum, LLC, executive vice
chairman for AmeriCares, chief
financial and operational controller
for Mercedes-Benz, N.A., and has led
the turnaround of several for-profit
corporations. As a volunteer, he
served as a founder and chair of the
Biomedical Engineering and Alliance
Consortium (BEACON) Foundation
board and served on the board of the
YMCA Vocational Counseling and
Testing Service in New York City.
Gretchen M. Dahlen.
Gretchen Dahlen is a
health care executive
and consumer advocate
from Decorah, Iowa. She
serves on the Member
and Social Impact Committee and
the National Policy Council
Nominating Committee.
Professionally, she is chief
administrative officer for Winneshiek
Medical Center. Her career includes
positions as executive director of
North Woods Community Health
Center, president and senior
consultant of the Dahlen Company
LLC, president and CEO of Meriter
Health Enterprises, administrator and
chief executive officer of Sanford
Hospital and Nursing Home and
assistant administrator of
Metropolitan Hospital and Health
Centers. Ms. Dahlen developed and
founded ConsumerHealthRatings.
com, a free public service guide to
online ratings of health care cost and
quality for consumers.
Ronald E. Daly, Sr. Ron
Daly is a retired business
executive from Olympia
Fields, Illinois. He serves
on the Member and
Social Impact
Committee and on the AARP
Foundation Board of Directors. Mr.
Daly spent 38 years at the R.R.
Donnelley Company, beginning as a
teenaged factory worker and
advancing to become president of its
largest unit. When he retired, he
became president and CEO of
Océ-USA Holding, a subsidiary of
Océ N.V. He serves on the Loyola
University of Chicago board of
trustees and the boards of U.S.
Cellular, SuperValu, and Metropolis
Strategies.
Allen Douma. Allen
Douma, M.D., is a
physician and business
professional from
Ashland, Oregon. He
serves on the AARP
Foundation Board of Directors. He
previously provided leadership as a
member of the AARP Oregon
Executive Council. Dr. Douma is chief
executive officer of Empower, LLC.
He also serves on the Patient-
Centered Outcomes Research
Institute Board of Governors. Dr.
Douma previously served as the
Medicaid director for the state of
Oregon, chief executive officer of
Health ResponseAbility Systems and
medical director for the Hartford and
Travelers insurance companies. He is
a board member of the Jefferson
Regional Health Alliance and Pacific
Care Low Income Housing.
